Deficiency of this enzyme is generally asymptomatic, and the inheritance of this disorder is autosomal dominant. Hemolysis results from combined deficiency of 6 phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and 6 phosphogluconolactonase suggesting a synergism of the two enzymopathies.
